On 23rd June 2008 the Confederation of British Industry CBI called on European policymakers to take the steps necessary for business to give its full support to the third phase of the Emissions Trading Scheme. This is a scheme designed to help tackle climate change by putting an overall cap on carbon emissions. Phase 3 will require EU members to make tough carbon reductions and kicks in after 2012 so British manufacturers are increasingly seeking energy efficient products and systems to help them reduce their carbon footprint.
One product that is certainly making its contribution is the Huco Dynatork air motor. This is a piston air motor as opposed to a vane air motor and that distinction provides important energy saving benefits. In simple terms the vane air motor comprises a cylinder inside which is a rotor with vanes that spins like a windmill. There clearly needs to be a gap between the edge of the vane and the casing to allow its free movement. And it’s this aspect that makes the vane motor very difficult to seal and as a result it wastes a lot of air.
The unique free-floating piston in a Dynatork air motor is much easier to seal. It is therefore far more cost efficient as most of the energy stored up in the compressed air is converted into motion. This motor therefore consumes up to 80% less air than a vane motor providing significant cost savings even at maximum torque.

The customer’s original purchasing criteria for the motors were greater reliability on 24/7 operation and freedom from lubrication to avoid the possibility of contamination. However by changing to the Huco Dynatork this manufacturer has gained considerably more than its original specification criteria.
The company has now installed 42 Huco Dynatork motors and these have provided a capital saving of two 600scfm compressors and an overall power saving of 152kVA per annum.
The new streamlined range of Huco Dynatork air motors is available with maximum torques up to 16Nm (or 550Nm with gearbox). They can be specified in aluminium or acetal and with a choice of motors and gearboxes or leadscrews. A further new introduction is a controller that holds the motor speed constant under variable load. This is ideal for situations such as paint stirring where torque reduces as the paint level falls.
